PRELIMINARY TASK: INSPIRATION FOR MY PHOTOS

I will surely capture some photos for my magazine cover and secondary images too, but before I go onto that let me show you some pictures which is going to give you an idea as to how my magazine is going to unfold. Here is an example of how my model is going to look and dress up. I would like to feature my model with such positivity in her face and her way of standing would also seem professional but appealing at the same time. And unlike many business magazines where entrepreneurs will dress up in their usual casual attire, my model will represent a professional business woman and dress up in a suit or an office look.  My cover would somewhat look like this: The secondary shots that I will be taking can majorly include full shots, medium shots, medium long shot and point of view shot. It would most probably be a 2 shot because in my opinion, business magazines / corporate magazines are incomplete without a shot showing interaction.  My content page will also be having a...

PRELIMINARY TASK: INTRO

Since we're done with the planning of our magazine, we're told to make a sample magazine which would be considered as our preliminary task. This preliminary magazine making task would help us identify where we can improve ourselves in our final magazine making and how everything is going to end up like.  Before I chose the genre for my animal magazine, I had in mind that I could also be making a magazine of the genre "business". This is because I find professionalism really attractive for a magazine genre. The name for my magazine could be    CORPORATE .  It would be challenging to make a preliminary magazine on this genre because getting or capturing photographs and pin-ups of people dressed up as entrepreneurs is really enthralling.  The cover page of my magazine would be 8 by 11 inches and the photos in my magazine would preferably be shot by my phone ie a redmi 9c  13 MP, f/2.2, 28mm (wide) camera.

BUDGET

My production and planning did not cost me much and I already knew before hand that no such budget is required. Although a collar was bought from a pet store since I thought it could be used a good prop, and the ones I had at home gave a very weary look which was not at all suitable for the photoshoot. No such money was spent elsewhere and the transportation wasnt a thing as it was my own house, and the photoshoot was taken in broad daylight so no money was spent on lighting too.

HOUSESTYLE

One part of the production of my magazine was to make sure how I would want the typography to be. This included the font style for the masthead, body copy, coverlines, buzzwords, puffs and other elements on the cover page. I used a website recommended by my teacher, to choose from a variety of fonts ie www.dafont.com .  MASTHEAD:  I wanted to go for a casual look for the masthead but also quite appealing to the eye apart from casual. By casual I mean I did not want a pointy professional font but a friendly one appropriate for a dog magazine. The font I chose was Grobold by Guy Buhry as it went right according to my preferences. It will be placed on top of my magazine stretched left to right.  COLOUR SCHEME: The color scheme of my magazine would be a light color on a dark background most probably. Because of the model on my cover, the color scheme is most likely to have the model's fur coat colors as the main establishing ones. This makes my color palette consist of...

SCHEDULE

Here I am finally uploading my schedule for my entire photoshoot after loads of planning. If i wouldnt have prepared a schedule I wouldve definitely been a prey to alot of problems regarding conveniency and feasibility taking into consideration that although my model wasn't a human subject, it still required cleaning...

EQUIPMENT USED

The camera I used was a Canon EOS100D DSLR accompanied with its battery, charger and a Kingston memory card that had to be emptied before I used it for my photoshoot since it had very minimum space. I also used a data cable to help me with the transfer of those photographs into my laptop so that I continue with my editing.

SOFTWARE USED

For the production of my magazine which also involves editing my captured photographs I will be using Adobe Photoshop. Not only my final magazine but this was also used in my preliminary task as well which makes me slightly familiar with it.  However I still have alot to learn about it and the tools I would want to use to make a good quality product.

DISTRIBUTION STRATEGY

As far as the distribution of my magazine is concerned, it will be made available in majorly all urban areas that are highly populated. These would be Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, and Multan in particular since statistics and research states that mostly dog owners are found in these urban areas.   I will be selling my magazine's copies at a fair price in the number of 1000. These will be available at big shops and stalls where mostly the upper class, upper middle class, and the middle class people will have their reach.

PUBLISHING HOUSE

The publishing house that I chose for my animal magazine would be DAWN. DAWN is a well known publishing house since its the oldest english language newspaper/ magazine in Pakistan. They usually have their spotlights on a variety of topics so in my opinion, they will feel no hesitation to publish my genre as well.  Another reason of the less likely chances for DAWN to reject my magazine is the number of people with dogs as pets in our country is quite high, which means that the genre of my magazine will be proven beneficial for many people since it is highly representative.

RECCE SHEET

The location for my photoshoot is my home's yard since it will provide me with broad daylight and a suitable green environment for a pets photoshoot. Its an easy to go location since its at my own place and there will be no issues taking permission. I can also take pictures for my double spread since neither the subject nor the location would be changing.

CHOOSING MY MODEL

The cover story of my dog-care magazine is based on the "Dos and dont's of dog training" and this will be shown by my subject who will represent the basic image of a pet dog. My model / subject would be a pedigreed Rottweiler who is my own pet. This is a feasible and easy model for my photographs since its in my own house and I wont be feeling the need to go to someone else's dog or pet. The dog is trained to act for poses too. I will be responsible for the styling of the dog.

MISE - EN - SCENE OF MY COVER PICTURE

Mise-en-scene is the term used to cover up the elements, aspects and codes that make up a shot, a picture or any kind of visual. These codes can include written codes, audio codes, technical codes or symbolic codes as well for instance camera shots, rules, angles, lighting and many more. To get a better understanding of how I will be capturing my own cover photo for my magazine, I designed a presentation that highlights its mise-en scene.    Mise-en-scene by vania imran

REFERENCE FOR COVER PICTURE

Its nice to look at some references for my cover story, so here are some of them:  LIGHTING:  I would use bright lighting and an outside sunny background ( mainly going to try to have greenery or nature behind ). My magazine is on dogs and the cover story focuses on the do's and dont's of dog training. So my cover would include a lighting that will be focusing on both the owner and the dog (if not the owner then focusing on the dog determined as a pet) . On the deeper end, this would also give off a positive vibe associated with keeping dogs as pets.  POSITIONING: I want to position my dog and its owner (if there is any) centrally hence challenging the rule of thirds. In this way Ill be having the cover lines on both sides of the page.
