COVER PAGE EDITING

This is the cover page that I finally ended up making. It took a lot of time editing and finalizing the cover page for this to end up like this.

The specifications for this file are exactly the same as the ones I initially used for my magazines and magazine relevant tasks. One thing to be kept in mind is that the size of the magazines pages are A4. The width and height was kept 8 by 11 inches and it has to be made sure that every other page of this magazine including the content page and double page analysis pages, have to be of the same ratio.

I tried various kinds of fonts for my masthead for it to look good on a pet magazine cover page. I ended up trying a GROBOLD font that has also been shown in one of my previous blogs. I couldnt decide a masthead with the proper colour because of the background and black and white seemed too typical. So to make the masthead look attractive, prominent, and quite visible on my page, I chose the colour orange for the masthead which also helped me choose the colour of other captions.

Orange is a color that goes along well with colors like brown and shades of brown. I preferred not to use a selling line for my magazine but put the issue date underneath the masthead in the same color. The font is different for the issue because that looks more appropriate since the issue date is not something that most people will be looking at first to.

My final masthead looked like this:

I made the cover line of my main article in the magazine with a comparitively lighter shaded font than the masthead (in between yellow and orange). The number "10" is made in a big font size deliberately because it is a buzz word. It is made more focused and catches the eye sooner and since its a buzz word it had to be made bigger specifically for the main cover line.

The name of the main article is written in the same font as the masthead and in the same color as the color of the number 10. I did think of putting the number and the rest of the cover line in a different color to make it different but it didn't seem appropriate once I tried it.

The tag line under the main cover line was made in a times new roman font with a brown background in a smaller font size. This tagline is different than the other taglines of other supporting cover lines so to make it different comparitively since it is the tag line of the main cover line.

My puff is a bit simple and too dry for a pet magazine but this seemed appropriate to me and I couldn't leave my magazine without a puff.

I added my puff with the help of inserting an elliptical shape and then giving it a dull shade of grey. The word "free" is different from the other words in the puff ie "Dog posters inside". The word "free" is in a font of MINDSET giving it an italic look while the rest of the words in the puff are the same as the masthead font ie GROBOLD.

I added 2-3 Supporting cover lines too along with their tag lines.

The above cover lines use the main font of ROOSE SALLY while their taglines are of a typical Times New Roman font. Putting taglines and guidelines underneath was a bit of a complex process because the length of these lines either made it difficult to fit in or seemed odd since the page was already being filled up. In one of the supporting cover line, the category of the article is also written ie "EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:" in the main GROBOLD font.

The first cover line "How to know if your dog suffers from anxiety" is a guide whereas the other coverline of "How to manage your dog if you're a working man/woman" is an exclusive interview in the magazine.

This cover line uses a fairly simple style and is even without  a guide line or tag line. The font used is an unembellished YEW BASTURD font and this cover line is a 'feature'. The font size also seems properly suitable.

My cover lines had page numbers put alongside by inserting an elliptical shape first and then putting the numericals in the shape.

This is how my magazine finally looked like.

SKETCHES AND ROUGH MOCKUPS

To start with the making of the magazine and moving on to working on the software, all I needed was firstly to make a rough sketch of how I would actually design the cover in regard to the placements and the heading etc. Then I also decided to roughly sketch the double spread too. Here is how i roughly sketched my magazine elements featuring all the components of a magazine to make it look appealing to the audience. I used the online auto draw tool for this purpose which made me design a rough sketch easily. Cover page : For my magazine cover I decided I would put a full shot of my dog (model) from head to toe. As my dog is trained I am looking forward to the fact that it would be easy for me to get a full shot it. However if he's too restless I really wont be able to control how he stands. In that I would take a close up shot and put it in the same way as sketched. It will be picture taken in high key lighting that I have thought would be taken in natural sun light following the ...

THE CONCEPTS ELABORATED

Another important part of media studies is how forms and languages are used to convey the products of media and its use of codes and conventions that helps it. These include different signs  and symbols to create meaning to something.  The most important of them is codes which are used in media and these are actually the connotations to the audience.    Initially there are two categories of codes that you'll find in media, one is the technical code and the other is the symbolic code. Technical codes includes all the equipment used to tell a story in a media text and includes camera techniques, framing, depth of field and exposure. Whereas symbolic codes on the other hand show whats beneath the surface of what we see for instance objects, setting, body language, clothing and color.  Other categories of codes include the written codes and the audio codes. The written codes as the label itself says, is the formal written language on a media product for examp...
